Firefox wins me back: 5 features that finally convinced me to switch from Chrome
What happened
- I dumped Firefox years ago due to bloat, lack of features, and problems with Mozilla as an organization.
- Over the past year, Firefox slowly morphed into exactly what I wanted and needed.
- The change wasn’t sudden but involved several features that coalesced over time, including some in pre-alpha Nightly builds.
Why it matters for me
I’m a tech enthusiast who cares about aesthetics and functionality. Firefox’s new theming engine finally satisfies my need for apps to look as good as they perform. The vertical tabs feature is more efficient than horizontal ones, allowing more tabs while keeping track of which is which. Containers prevent information leakage between tabs – I keep banking, shopping, work, and personal separate. The built-in VPN in beta is easily accessible with exempt sites option. And Smart Window for AI research works great, including local AI on my LAN server.
What to remember
- New theming engine applies to toolbars, menus, and messages (not just toolbars)
- Vertical tabs can slide between fully visible or narrow sidebar mode
- Containers support multiple accounts for same service like work/personal Google
- Firefox VPN is in beta on Nightly/Beta versions with region selection
- Smart Window supports local AI and learns from chats via Moments
