According to Upwork’s In-Demand Skills 2026 report, demand for skills that explicitly reference AI grew 109% year over year on the platform. The headline for freelancers: AI is not replacing independent work so much as reshaping it.

Creative skills are seeing the sharpest growth of any category. AI video generation and editing rose 329% year over year, while AI image generation and editing rose 95%. Coding and web development remain staunchly in demand too — clients are specifically seeking freelancers who can integrate AI into enterprise workflows or pilot ‘vibe coding’ for the first time.

The report’s key insight is that ‘AI work’ has moved beyond building AI tools into embedding those tools across disciplines. Upwork’s research institute notes that AI capabilities around vibe coding have not reduced demand for web design and development freelancers, and image/video generation tools have not lowered demand for editors and illustrators.

The takeaway for freelancers: combine a sought-after technical or creative skill with demonstrably human strengths — communication, problem-solving, and adaptability — and upskill with AI on the models and outputs that optimise the work you already do, rather than chasing generic AI training.
