India’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed a major milestone: more than 40 lakh (4 million) household rooftop solar installations by mid-2026, according to figures cited by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and industry trackers. The central government has disbursed over Rs 22,750 crore in Central Financial Assistance (CFA), including Rs 2,743 crore in May 2026 alone.
Launched in February 2024, the scheme offers households a direct subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 (Rs 30,000 per kW up to 2 kW, capped for systems above 3 kW), credited straight to the beneficiary’s bank account. The programme now targets 75 lakh installations by December 2026 and 1 crore (10 million) rooftop systems by the end of FY 2026-27, backed by a Rs 75,021 crore budget.
To reach underserved communities, the government has introduced a Utility-Linked Aggregation (ULA) model, planning around 30 lakh additional rooftop installations through partnerships with state electricity utilities. For homeowners, the practical upside is lower monthly bills and the ability to sell surplus power back to the DISCOM.
