The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana makes rooftop solar affordable for Indian homes, but the subsidy only lands if you follow the official process. Here is the 2026 workflow.
1. Register. Create an account on the national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in, and select your state, district and electricity distribution company.
2. Submit documents. Upload your latest electricity bill, identity proof and bank account details. The portal checks eligibility against the sanctioned load and roof ownership.
3. Get a quote and pick an approved vendor. The portal shows empanelled vendors and indicative system sizes. A 3 kW system is the typical sweet spot, qualifying for the maximum Rs 78,000 central subsidy (Rs 30,000/kW up to 2 kW, then Rs 18,000/kW for the third kW).
4. Install and inspect. An approved vendor installs the system and the DISCOM inspects and approves the grid connection and net-metering arrangement.
5. Receive the subsidy. Once approved, the Central Financial Assistance is credited directly to your bank account — you do not pay it to the vendor upfront. Surplus generation is then exported to the grid under net metering, lowering your bill further.
